Free lectures...

For Christmas I was given a book - Secret London. Although - having lived and worked in London for many years - much of the content of this book was not exactly "secret" to me, there are some things I had not come across, and some good ideas for walks too. This week we have been to two free lectures organised by Gresham College. One (on  mathematics) was at the Barnard's Inn venue and the other (on astronomy) at the Museum of London. We've never been to Barnard's Inn before, and had never been to the lecture theatre at the Museum of London either, so both were new venues - and the lectures were excellent too. The weather (bitterly cold wind) was not, however, conducive to taking long walks, so we've not yet extended the "Secret London" idea to discovering many other new places. Of course, transport was free using our cards...

Fitness?

The travel card isn't the only 60+ benefit recently acquired... the local fitness centres also offer great discounts to us "oldies" so I've signed up for these too. A couple of "silver aerobics" classes have left me in no doubt of my un-fitness. Wonder if I have any muscles which AREN'T aching... Must try to persevere though - but hard to keep on walking to the classes when I can get a free bus ride!!

The card arrives

So... I'm now the owner of a 60+ travel card, which means I can travel anywhere within London's zones 1-9  for free. I plan to make the most of it! It arrived on Saturday, and I immediately made sure it was working by getting a bus to do some shopping. Yesterday (Sunday) it was useful for me to travel home from a meeting at Blackfriars. The card cost me £10 and will have paid for itself after four more bus journeys. It's a photocard - with a horrible photo, taken quickly with my mobile phone so that I could apply for it on the opening day for applications. Still, I will keep it inside my old Oyster wallet so the photo won't be on display!!
Guess the car will be staying on the drive more often in future.
